WHO Global Status Report on Road Safety launched on 15 June 2009

On 15 June, the WHO has launched the Global Status Report on Road Safety. The Global status report on road safety is the first broad assessment of the road safety situation in 178 countries accounting for over 98% of the world's population, using data drawn from a standardized survey. For the country profiles, click here.

First global assessment

This first global assessment of road safety finds that almost half of the estimated 1.27 million people who die in road traffic crashes every year are pedestrians, motorcyclists and cyclists. While progress has been made towards protecting people in cars, the needs of these vulnerable groups of road users are not being met.

Benchmark

The results of the report provide a benchmark that countries can use to assess their road safety position. Internationally, the data presented can collectively be considered as a global "baseline" against which progress over time can be measured. The Global status report presents a number of key findings and key recommendations.
